Alcatraz

Description

Alcatraz Island is located in the San Francisco Bay, 1.25 miles (2.01 km) offshore from San Francisco, California, United States. The small island was developed with facilities for a lighthouse, a military fortification, a military prison (1868), and a federal prison from 1933 until 1963. Beginning in November 1969, the island was occupied for more than 19 months by a group of aboriginal people from San Francisco who were part of a wave of Native activism across the nation with public protests through the 1970s. In 1972, Alcatraz became a national recreation area and received designation as a National Historic Landmark in 1986.

It is advisable to book in advance the ticket to visit Alcatraz Island. The ticket costs about 35 dollars.

Arriving on the island, we chose to make our visit, we even without special guide. Inside the former prison, an audio guide is available. This presentation allows us to go back in time. I was really impressed firstly by the prison itself, but especially the guide who was really well done. You could hear the paths of former prisoners, cries, it was like we lived above the scenes. All parts were described and meant several things. We had to follow instructions as to reach a place or a room, which then made the story more exciting.

Here are some photos.

Alcatraz closer.

The beautiful view on San Francisco

This is an attempt to escape. Prisoners were able to dig in with a spoon. It's crazy.

A quote that I remember...

'' Break the rules and you go to prison, break the prison rules and you go to Alcatraz. ''
